The dynamic, confident, eloquent and authoritative character that Carl Weathers brings to life has so many layers - both socially, racially, and thematically. Most of all though - this is Apollo Creed's film too. There's a lot of human relationship you're leaving out too, the combating personalities between Rocky and Mickey make a great dynamic. "Gritty" was in for film in 1976 - see Taxi Driver, which lends some further context to why so many of these characters aren't very cinema-esque. These characters are genuine and I guarantee you are more likely to meet people like Paulie, and Adrien then you are to meet Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

  • When Rocky's simmering inner self-hate boils over and he loses it at Mickey and all the bitterness of his life and his situation comes to the top.
  • When Rocky is offered the fight with the champ and says no.
  • Rocky's argument with Gazzo's driver, wherein his ULTIMATE COMEBACK is "you should count your blessings".
  • The difference in how he conveys his feelings when he describes his childhood picture to Adrian vs when he is contemplating it alone.
  • Rocky practicing his joke in the mirror, ultimately burning out from the mental taxing from a simple one-liner.
  • We get to know Rocky through his interactions, and they add up to a world that's downright noir in how much everyone fucking hates Rocky, including himself. Why does Rocky hang out with him? We don't know - but we can speculate based on what we know about Rocky, which is that he's not that likable himself. I love Boyd Crowder as a character - but you're never going to meet someone like Boyd. Paulie isn't an asshole with a heart of gold - he's just an asshole. Rocky's minor characters are some of the most memorable in cinema because they're real. Quick disclaimer that Rocky is my favorite film of all time. Especially from people who loved the film and/or liked all the characters, can you put into words why you liked it? I want to hear another perspective on this. For example, the whole baseball bat scene was out of place and over the top for me. Even though Adrian changes a bit later on (standing up to her brother), she's so shy and passive and I didn't find it convincing that they were in a relationship.Īs for Paulie.well, did anyone really like him? I get it, he's supposed to be an asshole (even more so in the other movies IIRC) and offers contrast to who Rocky is, but even then I wasn't happy with him.

I realize they are mostly just there to gives us a glimpse at other things in Rocky's life, but still. I'm not so thrilled about the minor characters, though. Rocky was just that and the whole film hinges on this authenticity and likability and Stallone delivered. I don't think I've seen another film where I can perfectly believe that the protagonist is a guy you can run in on the street. Anyway, I can see why Rocky Balboa is so well liked and the more I think about Stallone's performance, the more I'm impressed by it. All in all it was a mediocre film for me (5/10) - and I mean "for me", I'm not saying it's overrated.
